Newborn photography is evolving, for me anyway. I do still offer professionally posed portraits of your baby in cute props. But my focus for your session is your family – your family is at the heart of my newborn photography.
So I transformed Salustri Photography’s studio into a boho-styled home-from-home. Why? Because I listen to my clients and what I most often heard was “I love natural portraits!” You love them because they are a far more genuine capture of you newborn baby and your family dynamics.
Natural baby portraits
My newborn portrait sessions are natural and organic. I want to see you both in your roles as parents – this is what you will love to treasure. I want to see you all with your family dog, who was your first baby after all.
As the famous TV programme used to say, ‘This is your life!’ Give me real interactions. Give me a glimpse of your family bonds and I can give your portraits with genuine feeling and memories.
Parents and children love the lifestyle set because it’s a homely space where you can be yourselves. Dads love it because it breaks away from the traditional ‘fake smile and look at the camera’ session – I can’t tell you how relieved dads are! Little ones love it because it feels like a home and is an environment they are familiar with.
As it’s so important to be yourselves, I offer pre-shoot consultations and styling advice. Your shoot will be tailored around your family dynamics and styling can be adapted to your personal preferences – no elaborate gowns, just you, relaxed and comfortable.
I always include a variety of props in my newborn lifestyle sessions. Your family shots come first, then we move on to portraits of your baby using a posing table, beds, baskets or shelves. These portraits are reliant on your baby being asleep, which is why your session will last 2-3 hours.
When is best?
If you would like a newborn shoot with me, book in a couple of months in advance on your due date so I can manage my diary. I can only do 2-3 shoots per week and quickly get booked up.
Traditionally, babies are best brought to the studio between 7 and 14 days. This is because they are sleepiest at this stage. After two weeks, some babies get unsettled or break out in baby acne. However, 2020 lockdowns taught me that this ‘newborn’ stage can be extended well to around 12 weeks. Babies will just be more alert and some props will be limited, but they will also be characterful and smiley, which parents love.
